Enjoy a 11 DAY vacation to
April 1-11, 2011
INCLUDES
EXCLUDES
Please note that a passport is required. We will be traveling in malaria-free zones. Therefore, no immunizations are necessary, but may be suggested by your physician.
Day
1 Garden
Court Sandton Hotel
is well located in Sandton, an exclusive area north of Johannesburg,
with easy access to Sandton City and Sandton Square, South Africa's
premier shopping complexes, which offer an outstanding range of shops,
cinemas, restaurants and banks. Garden Court Sandton Hotel is a short
distance to the world-class Sandton Convention Centre, South Africa's
premier conference venue.
The tour includes all of the major
points of interest, such as Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Baragwanath
taxi rank, Freedom Square, Hector Pietersen Memorial and Nelson
Mandela's former home. Lunch will be at Wandies (Baseia). A cozy
tavern in the middle of Soweto, Wandies Restaurant is popular with both
locals and tourists alike. It has become a mandatory stop on the route
for virtually all Soweto tours. The restaurant has played host to such
luminaries as Richard Branson - the CEO of Virgin Airlines, Evander
Holyfield, Jesse Jackson and Quincy Jones. For those who seek a touch of
the exotic, the establishment serves indigenous cuisine. Meals are in
the form of a buffet and vegetarians are also catered for. Enjoy the afternoon shopping.
Lesedi
is a multi-cultural African village, set amongst the pristine Bushveld
and rocky hills less than an hour’s drive from the city of
Johannesburg. Guests are escorted by the Cultural hosts of Lesedi for an
experience of a lifetime and introduced to the art, dancing, history,
tribal legend and cuisine of five of Southern Africa’s greatest
tribes. Guests are then escorted to the Boma for traditional singing and
dancing and the people of Lesedi tell stories that date back to the days
of their ancestors. A traditional African-style feast is served in the
restaurant, with a full bar close at hand. Tucked in the expanses of the
malaria-free Pilanesberg National Park, Bakubung
Bush Lodge offers the
best of both worlds when combining the peaceful bush environment with
luxury and comfort. Each of the lodge’s rooms has been
decorated to reflect the mood and ambience of the bush and is equipped
with the necessary amenities to ensure supreme comfort. Enjoy a fine
meal in the restaurant or relax over a light meal on the terrace
overlooking the vastness of the game reserve. Alternatively, evening
bush braais in the Boma are provided for a unique African dining
experience. Accommodation:

The Pilanesberg
National Park borders on the entertainment complex of Sun City. It
is almost perfectly circular because it comprises the area of a 1200
million years old volcano crater with a small lake in the centre. The
park exists within the transition zone between the dry Kalahari and
wetter Lowveld vegetation, commonly referred to as "Bushveld".
Unlike any other large park, unique overlaps of mammals, birds and
vegetation occur because of this transition zone.
Virtually all the animal species of southern Africa exist here,
including healthy populations of lion, leopard, black and white rhino,
elephant and buffalo - Africa's "Big Five". Bird watching is
excellent with over 300 species recorded. The park offers a number of
wonderful picnic spots, numerous hides for game watching, huge walk-in
aviaries, safe hiking trails, safari drives at night and flights over
the park in a hot-air balloon.
Then upon
arrival at Cape Town Airport you will be met by a Tour Representative
and transferred to your hotel. The Commodore Hotel
is a luxury hotel situated in the heart of the Victoria & Alfred
Waterfront, Cape Town's center of activity with a variety of stores,
restaurants and bars. The Hotel offers superb service and excellent
cuisine in a secure, friendly environment and most rooms have wonderful
views of Table Mountain, Table Bay and Signal Hill. The Clipper
Restaurant offers superb dining in a tranquil setting, from a
mouth-watering buffet breakfast to a diverse à la carte menu and
devilish desserts! To delight the palate further, indulge in a large
selection of sherries, brandies and fine cognacs, or explore The
Commodore House Wine Collection. Alternatively, relax to the nostalgic
melodies played by the piano man over a light meal or high tea at The
Admiralty Bar & Lounge. Accommodation:

After a stop for lunch, it's on to the
Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and its scenic viewing point. The
spectacular sea and mountain views are reason enough to make the 41 mile
trip from Cape Town. Amid the rocky landscape - home to mountain zebra,
eland and ostriches - blooms magnificent Cape flora. Continue along the coastline to the
beautiful Boulders Beach where you can sit among a colony of penguins.
Our last stop is the naval port of Simonstown, the country's third
oldest European settlement. Return to your hotel in the late
afternoon.
"No easy
road to freedom" was a central theme in most of the Mass Democratic
Movement's campaigns, from the early days through to the late 1980s. Any
understanding of present day conditions in South Africa is greatly
enhanced by looking at past injustice, the legacy of the struggle and
the promise of reconstruction and development initiatives under way at
present. Freedom has not come easy. This tour offers a wealth of insight
into South African history. It includes a brief educational introduction
to Cape Town, one of the world's most varied and sought-after cities.
You will visit the Bo-Kaap/Malay Quarter, District Six, Townships, and
Cape Flats. Continue with
a tour to Robben Island when you board a ferry at the Victoria &
Albert Waterfront for the half-hour ride to the prison where former
South African president Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners
were held. It is now a World Heritage Site with stunning views of Cape
Town and Table Mountain. For nearly 400
years, Robben Island, 7.5miles off the coast from Cape Town, was a place
of banishment, exile, isolation and imprisonment. It was here that
rulers sent those they regarded as political troublemakers, social
outcasts and the unwanted of society.
Some freedom fighters, such as Nelson Mandela, spent more than a
quarter of a century in prison for their beliefs. Robben Island came to
symbolize, not only for South Africa and the African continent, but also
for the entire world, the triumph of the human spirit over enormous
hardship and adversity. The Robben Island Museum Tours Department
includes some ex-political prisoners who act as tour guides on Cape
Town's World Heritage Site. Accommodation:
The Commodore Hotel (B, L)
Cape Town is a fabulously
diverse and vibrant city; from its beautiful natural attributes to its
colorful culture, stunning wine farms and captivating history – it’s
a tourist heaven. Cape Town offers historic and cultural sites,
world-class museums and bustling markets, inviting beaches and lush
gardens, as well as great restaurants and wonderful shopping. While
South Africa is perhaps best known for its game parks and natural
splendors, it is also a land whose cities exude urban sophistication,
rich in history, the arts, entertainment and other cosmopolitan
delights. There will be a farewell
dinner The Quarterdeck Restaurant. Accommodation:
The Commodore Hotel (B, D)
